When you get a prescription for Coumadin®, follow your physicians orders and read the package insert. These are just a few select things you need to know about Coumadin®.

Try to take your Coumadin® at the same time every day or as prescribed by your physician. Notice the shape and color of your tablets. Each color is a different strength in milligrams. Your dosage or strength may change so always be current on the color of your Coumadin tablets.

If you forget to take your medication, call your physician for directions on when to take your next pill.

As discussed elsewhere in this web site, over-the-counter medications can interact with Coumadin®. always tell you physician of all medications you are currently taking.

Inform your dentist or any other physician you see that you take Coumadin®. Always carry a card or bracelet telling others you take Coumadin® so if you need medical attention, medical personnel will know what medications you are on.

Keep your eating habits and physical activity level the same. The Coumadin Clinic at CCND and your physician will determine the proper dosage of Coumadin®.

Some very important observations need to be made while on Coumadin® drug therapy. Call you physician immediately if you start to experience unusual bleeding such as from cuts, nosebleeds, bleeding of the gums, an increased menstral flow in women, or coughing or vomiting blood. You should also be on the look out for unusual bruising, red or dark brown urine, or red or tarry-black stools. Any vomiting diarrhea, or fever should be reported to your physician immediately. Chest pains, dizziness, or trouble breathing should also be reported immediately. If you feel you need help immediately or suddenly feel ill, call 911 for emergency help.

Coumadin® is a powerful and very useful drug. With proper monitoring and with frequent check-ups at the Coumadin Clinic at CCND, you will lead a healthy normal life.
